Home gyms are becoming popular. A lot of benefits to having a home gym, no membership fees, open 24 hours, and you can lift in your pyjamas if you please. I have had a gym in my garage since 1982 when I lived at my parents.
We purchased our home in Grove City in 1994 and I finished our garage. I installed carpet, a gas heater, and drywall. I have about $8k in equipment. My recommendation, don't buy cheap equipment. Good equipment lasts a lifetime. Items I would recommend, number 1 a smith machine. A good smith will cost about $1200-$1500. Smiths adds safety to your workout and allows you to work without a spotter. Dumbbells are a must, my dumbells go from 15 to 85 pounds and are versatile in what exercises you a complete and allow more isolation as well. Finally, a rower is the best cardio equipment available for a home gym. Rowers work the entire body and take a lot of stamina to use.
A great site to visit is on Youtube that reviews equipment and shows people who have created home gyms.
